Nina had barely stepped foot outside the doctor’s office when she received a call from her husband. “Hello?”

“Hey, sugar. How was your appointment? How’s the baby?”

“He’s doing really well. I got some good pictures for you.”

“I can’t wait to see them. Matter fact, it’s almost lunchtime. Do you want to meet up at your spot? My treat.”

“I almost turned you down until you mentioned paying. I can meet for lunch. Should I head over there now?”

“Yeah, go ahead.”

“All right, I’ll see you soon,” Nina confirmed before hanging up. Her phone rang again. Nina swiftly answered once she realized the call was coming from her employer. “Hello?”

“Mrs. Doran?”

“This is she.”

“This is Sylvie from HR.”

“Hi, Sylvie. How are you?”

“I’ve been better, but I can’t complain. I’m calling because we’re concluding our investigation—”

“Thank God. I can return to work.”

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Doran, but we are letting you go.”

“Excuse me?” Nina asked in disbelief.

“We haven’t found any wrongdoing on your part; however, the anonymous reporter has taken their complaint to social media, bad-mouthing the company and leaving horrible reviews on whatever platform possible. I’m sorry, Mrs. Doran, but we cannot keep you employed with the practice.”

“I-I don’t—you can’t do this. I haven’t done anything wrong. This is unlawful termination. I’m having a baby in 10 weeks. I need my health insurance.”

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Doran. I really wish there was something I could do. I made a plea on your behalf to the partners, but they want to distance themselves from this situation. You will have limited access to the employee portal until the end of the month to gather your paystubs, 401k statements, and W-2s if needed. Did you want to schedule an appointment to pick up your belongings? If that’s not convenient, then we can send it to you in the mail.”

“Yeah, send me my shit,” Nina spat before hanging up the phone.
